|
Blessed with mountains
and sea, Wenzhou boasts abundant natural resources. Besides cultivated land, land
resources are mainly composed of sea shoal, silted beaches along the Oujiang, Feiyun
and Aojiang rivers and a mountain terrain of over 200,000 hectares. Total water
resources amount to 14,113 billion cubic meters.
The main marine
resources are petroleum and natural gas as well as iron and manganese deposits which
are found along the coast and on the continental shelf of the Eastern China Sea.
The tidal belt of the eastern coastal counties, with an area of over 100,000 hectares,
breeds razor clams, sea clams, oysters, shrimps, crabs and hard clams. The Nanji
Islands are rich in over 490 varieties of shellfish and algae, while the main coastal
fishing grounds of Dongtou County, the Beiji and Nanji Islands and Yueqing Bay are
known for over 370 species of fish, such as the tairtail, yellow croaker and eel.

Major forest resources
total over 160 varieties of commercial crops, including oranges and tangerines,
tea, loquat, red bayberries, sugarcane and jute, and over 280 varieties of timber,
including pine, fir and oak. Wuyanling Ridge, possessing a subtropical ever-
>green broad-leaved forest with native vegetation, is the green treasure-house of
southern Zhejiang Province.
There are over
40 varieties of mineral resources. The alunite reserves amount to 80 percent of
the national total, winning Wen-
zhou the title “the world alunite capital”, while its granite reserves rank highly
in the country in terms of both quality and variety.
As for tourism
resources, there are 2 state-level scenic areas, 2 state-level natural protected
areas and 9 provincial-level and 12 municipal-level scenic areas. The combined scenic
areas account for one-fifth of the city’s total land area.
